LEGO robotics – renewable energy, pneumatics & science (Y5-6)

This course has two streams. Renewable energy and pneumatics. In renewable energy, we’ll build robots and cars that get their energy from solar and students will gain a base knowledge of electricity and solar and renewable energy in general. In pneumatics we’ll explore how we can leverage pressurized air to lift heavy things or make a robot hand.

The big finale is a fantastic science experiment to explore gravity where we’ll build a LEGO machine that helps us understand how gravity works and how strong the gravity force is.

This course is best suited for Year 5-6 primary school kids with an interest in science. There will be plenty of LEGO building as well to keep the kids entertained.

The class outline is

  • Session 1: Introduction, Boat Pulley, Pneumatics Intro
  • Session 2: Hand generator & Robot Hand
  • Session 3: Wind Turbine & Robot Arm
  • Session 4: Hydro Turbine & Stamping Press
  • Session 5: Solar & Scissor Lift
  • Session 6: Coding introduction
  • Session 7: LEGO Mindstorm Robotics + Solar car
  • Session 8: LEGO Mindstorm Robotics + Scissor lift
  • Session 9+10: LEGO Mindstorm Robotics + Gravity experiment
The LEGO robotics – renewable energy, pneumatics & science course will enable students to

  • work independently on scientific experiments including preparation, measurements and outcome discussion
  • learn about key scientific principles including Newtonian Law
  • learn the fundamentals of renewable energy generation and consumption and how this can be leveraged in everyday tasks (wind turbine, solar powered car)
  • learn the fundamentals of pneumatics and how pressurized air can be used to make tough things easy (like lifting heavy objects or stamping press)
  • learn to code in python
  • combine their knowledge in renewable energy and pneumatics with a Robot (LEGO Mindstorms) to complete set tasks
  • complete their (probably) very first scientific experiment in measuring the gravity constant by combining all of the components together (LEGO building, robotics, coding and science)
  • Start date
    14-10-2024 0:00
  • End date
    06-12-2024 0:00
  • Course length
    8x Lesson
  • Class duration
    60 Minutes
